ICIMOD, in collaboration with national partners in China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan, has undertaken field research since 2008 to assess and strengthen local adaptation strategies to floods and droughts in the Hindu Kush Himalayan region. The study, spanning areas in Pakistan, Nepal, India, and China, reveals evolving responses to climate variability, emphasizing the role of state policies, market influences, and local institutions in adaptive capacity. The findings underscore the need for strategies that address short-term and long-term challenges, incorporate local-level planning, and consider structural and non-structural disaster mitigation measures. The study recommends diversifying livelihoods and enhancing local institutions to build resilience in the face of climatic and economic shifts.
