Developing a Disaster Management Framework for News Production in Nepal

Summary

This report represents the importance of media operation, framing and its management in order to manage disasters in Nepal. Nepal faces ongoing threats from natural hazards due to its topography and changing climate conditions. Despite ranking 11th globally in disaster risk, media coverage of these events is inadequate. This study analyzed existing natural disaster news coverage and conducted in-depth interviews to propose a "Natural Disaster Friendly Media Management Framework (NDFMMF)." The framework emphasizes policy endorsement, sensitization, balanced media response throughout the disaster management cycle, revisiting news protocol, and specialized journalism. It aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of Nepalese media in addressing prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery phases of disaster management.
