Drought assessment on barley and millet production in Karnali Province, Nepal

Summary

This study was conducted in Karnali Province. The report depicted that Nepal assesses the spatio-temporal characteristics of agricultural drought and its impact on winter barley and summer millet crops. Using precipitation data from 1988 to 2018 across 18 stations and agricultural yield data from 2003 to 2018, the research used Standardized Precipitation Indices (SPI-3 and SPI-4) to measure drought intensity. The findings highlight significant occurrences of both summer and winter droughts in Salyan, Surkhet, and Jumla districts, with winter droughts increasing notably after 2015. Barley yields were found to be more affected by drought compared to millet, suggesting millet as a viable option for sustainable agriculture in the region due to its drought tolerance.
