The Impact of Disasters on a Heritage Tourist Destination: A Case Study of Nepal Earthquakes

Summary

This study explores the impact of the 2015 earthquakes on Nepal's tourism and economy using ARIMA modeling. It finds that while tourist arrivals initially plummeted post-earthquake, they quickly rebounded and exceeded pre-earthquake levels, especially among adult age groups and leisure travelers. The tourism sector's resilience was evident through rapid recovery in tourism receipts and GDP from 2017 onwards, indicating effective disaster management and reconstruction efforts. The findings suggest Nepal's unique cultural and natural heritage attractions, coupled with a surge in dark tourism, contributed significantly to the destination's recovery, highlighting implications for disaster-resilient tourism strategies globally.
