National Environmental Health Impact Assessment Guidelines for Development Projects

Summary

The guideline has the purpose, objectives, and justification for conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. It outlined the approach taken in the subsequent chapters to critically review the EIA process, examine case studies of development activities, assess health hazards and risks from environmental problems, and address issues to facilitate Environmental Health Impact Assessment (EHIA). It has a historical background of the emergence of EIA and explores the existing EIA process, with a focus on its health component. It presents case studies reviewing EIA reports of various development activities, highlighting the current situation of health, health impacts, mitigation measures, and health monitoring. It discussed health hazards and risks from environmental problems such as water and air pollution, soil pollution, and solid waste pollution and addressed issues that need to be addressed to facilitate EHIA, including current health policy, inter-sectoral collaboration, and strengthening existing EIA guidelines for health. Finally, it delved into the EHIA process, covering general guidelines, techniques for conducting EHIA, the environmental health risk assessment process, and the contents of EHIA reports.
