The Himalayas, known for their superlatives like being the youngest mountain chain and home to the highest peak, also face significant landslide challenges. These landslides are inevitable due to factors such as fragile rocks, tectonic boundaries, and seismic activity resulting from the northward movement of the Indian Plate. Both geological and historical records show that landslides have been highly destructive, causing extensive damage and losses. To address this, there is an emphasis on monitoring landslides using modern techniques for systematic studies to understand their extent and effects and suggest appropriate remedial measures.
