Wildfire Dynamics in Nepal from 2000-2016

Summary

Recent years saw increasing global concerns regarding the rising trend of wildfires. However, in the context of Nepal, limited research had been conducted on wildfires. This study aimed to objectively examine wildfire trends by comparing wildfire incidents, burnt areas, burning days, and wildfire density in the periods before 2016 (2000-2015) and 2016. The researchers used MODIS satellite images and collected wildfire-related literature. They found that wildfire incidence and burnt areas increased over the 17 years. In 2016, the wildfire incidence was about 33% higher than the annual average from 2000 to 2015, and burnt areas were 42% greater.
