Province-Level Sphere Training Equips Participants with Essential Skills in Emergency Response

Kathmandu, 28th February 2020 - DPNet-Nepal, in collaboration with Sphere Nepal, successfully organized a three-day Province Level Sphere Training from 26th to 28th February 2020. The training, facilitated by Sphere Training of Trainers (ToT) graduates Mr. Bishnu Prasad Timilsina, Ms. Luna Khadka, and Ms. Shubha Kamana Mandal, saw the participation of 28 individuals from various organizations representing eight districts of Province-2.

The training commenced with an introduction to the program, participants, and the shared objectives. On the first day, sessions focused on STP-3, providing an understanding of Sphere Standards in the local context; STP-4, exploring humanitarian principles; STP-5, highlighting protection principles; STP-6, covering the Core Humanitarian Standard. Similarly, the second day featured sessions on three technical chapters: STP-7, focusing on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH); STP-8, addressing Food Security and Nutrition; STP-9, discussing Shelter and Settlement; and STP-17, delving into Sphere Cash and Market. The final day of training included sessions on STP-10, Health; STP-11, applying Sphere in practice; STP-12, incorporating Sphere in the Program Cycle; STP-16, emphasizing Sphere and Coordination; and STP-20, evaluation, and wrap-up. The sessions were conducted using participatory methods, engaging participants through group work, exercises, role plays, PowerPoint presentations, and video demonstrations.

During the closing session, two participants expressed their gratitude for the training and shared their learnings and experiences. They acknowledged DPNet-Nepal for providing this valuable opportunity and expressed the need for refresher Sphere training. The participants highlighted the importance of extending Sphere Standard training to the local level and community members to sensitize and capacitate them in maintaining minimum standards during emergency response. The program concluded with the distribution of participation certificates and closing remarks from Mr. Surya Bahadur Thapa, Chairperson of DPNet-Nepal. Mr. Thapa expressed his appreciation to all participants, their respective organizations, and the contributing agencies for their support. He emphasized the importance of delivering quality services and being accountable during humanitarian assistance.

The event received support from 11 contributing agencies, namely Action Aid, Caritas, Christian Aid, Dan Church Aid, International Nepal Fellowship, Lutheran World Federation, OXFAM, Plan International, Save the Children, UNICEF, and World Vision International. Their collective support made the training program a success, further enhancing emergency response capabilities in the region.
