'Indo-Nepal Jal Sambad Samuha' Launched to Foster Dialogue on Water-Induced Disasters

Patna, Bihar - DPNet Nepal took a significant step on July 31st, 2019, by launching an online platform called the 'Indo-Nepal Jal Sambad Samuha' (Indo-Nepal Water Dialogue Group). This initiative, commemorating the historic 'Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship' signed on the same date in 1950, aims to facilitate a meaningful dialogue between NGOs from Nepal and India. The primary objectives of the platform are to build a common consensus on water-induced disasters and enhance the flood early warning system. The launch event took place in the presence of P. N. Rai, the Principal Secretary of the Disaster Management Division of the Government of Bihar, in Patna.

Mr. Raju Thapa, the General Secretary of DPNet Nepal, emphasized the need for an online dialogue group to foster collaboration and develop a shared understanding among NGO activists from India and Nepal. Dr. Sanjeev Bhuchar, Senior Watershed Management Specialist at ICIMOD, expressed his satisfaction with the spontaneous creation of the group and extended his best wishes for its success.

During the program 'Koshi DRR Knowledge Hub Country Consultation,' all participating NGO activists unanimously entrusted DPNet-Nepal with the responsibility of administering the Jal Sambad Samuha.

Ms. Kanchan Shrestha, the Koshi Basin Initiative Coordinator at ICIMOD, pledged her commitment to supporting the Jal Sambad Samuha for fruitful outcomes.

This significant initiative aims to foster cross-border collaboration, exchange knowledge and experiences, and enhance preparedness and response mechanisms for water-related disasters in the region. The Indo-Nepal Jal Sambad Samuha holds the potential to serve as a crucial platform for addressing the common challenges faced by Nepal and India in the realm of water-induced disasters and implementing effective solutions through joint efforts.
