Land use Change Modelling: Current Practice and Research Priorities

Summary

This paper reviews existing models and identifies key areas for future research in land use change modeling. Land use change models help analyze the causes and consequences of land use changes and support land use planning and policy. It highlights six important concepts: level of analysis, cross-scale dynamics, driving forces, spatial interaction, temporal dynamics, and level of integration. The review suggests that progress has been made, but new-generation models are needed to address multi-scale aspects, quantify neighborhood effects, handle temporal dynamics, and enhance integration between disciplines and urban-rural models. Meeting these requirements will improve support for analyzing land use dynamics and policy formulation.
