Summary

The journal article encompasses land use change modeling, especially when done in a spatially explicit, integrated, and multi-scale manner, which is a valuable technique for projecting future scenarios and testing our understanding of land use processes. These models offer the ability to assess the sensitivity of land use patterns to variable changes and test the stability of social and ecological systems through scenario building. A workshop on spatially explicit land-use/land-cover models within the LUCC project highlighted developments in modeling drivers of land-use change, scale dependency, predicting location and quantity of change, and incorporating biophysical feedback into models.
