This is a case study published in the Journal of Hydrology: Regional Studies. In this study, the Khando River in eastern Nepal is examined to assess flood hazards and vulnerabilities in a frequently flooding area. The analysis covers return periods of 20, 50, 100, and 200 years and focuses on wattle and daub houses along the river. The study reveals that the 2017 flood was equivalent to a 20-year return period flood. It also shows that the difference in inundation depth between 20 and 200 years of return periods is not significant. Vulnerability analysis indicates that wattle and daub houses are highly vulnerable, even to a 20-year return period flood, suggesting potential future consequences for floods of 50, 100, and 200-year return periods.
