Mobilizing communities toward a steady Recovery-Caritas Rebuilding Efforts: Two Years On

Summary

This report focuses on mobilizing communities towards steady recovery following the 2015 Nepal earthquakes, which had magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.3. The earthquakes resulted in nearly 9,000 deaths, over 22,300 injuries, and affected 8 million people across 31 districts. Caritas Nepal, supported globally, provided emergency relief to over 70,000 households and initiated a three-year recovery program for 9,400 households. Their efforts included promoting earthquake-resistant housing, establishing 149 shelter groups, training masons and technicians, and distributing housing grants. The report highlights the construction or renovation of 17 water systems, the empowerment of WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) committees, and improvements in school sanitation. Livelihood recovery initiatives encompassed Cash for Work programs, support for crop production, training in sustainable agriculture, and enhancements in irrigation practices. Protection measures ensured dignified service delivery, trained recovery personnel, and implemented feedback mechanisms and psychosocial support.
