Strengthening Local Risk Governance in Nepal (नेपालमा स्थानीय जोखिम सुशासनलाई सुदृढ गर्ने)

Summary

This report focuses on strengthening local risk governance in Nepal. The Nepal Red Cross Society, as part of the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance, collaborated with the Government of Nepal to improve local disaster risk governance through more effective municipal laws and policies. It highlights the challenge of devolving disaster risk management responsibilities to Nepal's 753 municipalities, which often lacked resources, knowledge, and guidance. Using the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRM) platform, they co-created the Municipal Disaster Risk Governance Assessment Tool to help municipalities meet new federal responsibilities. Despite delays due to COVID-19, six municipalities piloted the tool, leading to improvements in local disaster management plans. By 2025, all municipalities are expected to integrate disaster risk management into their local plans, strengthening overall resilience, as mentioned in the report.
