DPNet Holds Emergency Meeting on Gen-Z Movement Crisis

  Sep 18, 2025

Kathmandu, Sept 9 – In response to the Gen-Z movement that began on September 8, the DPNet organized a special online meeting on September 9 to discuss the emerging humanitarian risks. The meeting was attended by board members and advisors.

The online program began with a condolence message honoring those who lost their lives and wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured. Participants acknowledged the seriousness of the unfolding situation, noting that beyond political unrest, there are cascading risks such as shutdowns of essential services like electricity and water, the possibility of looting, vandalism, and a potential deepening of humanitarian crises.

Discussions aligned on whether DPNet should publicly respond to the crisis. Some members emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality while calling attention to the humanitarian consequences. Others argued that political unrest, though not directly under the disaster risk reduction framework, could lead to disasters such as fire outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies, making it a matter of concern for the network.

There were mixed views on issuing a press statement. While some suggested releasing a neutral humanitarian appeal, others advised against immediate public positioning, preferring instead to analyze the evolving situation and prepare for future engagement.

The meeting concluded with the decision to hold further discussions with the executive committee later in the evening of September 9 to determine the next steps. Dr. Raju Thapa formally closed the meeting, reminding members of DPNet’s role as a collective platform and as the secretariat of the National Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (NPDRR).
